Indonesian Literary Works on the Net*)

By TS Pinang and Vincent TA Nugroho**)

Literature is written works such as fiction, poetry, drama, and criticism that are recognized as having important or permanent artistic value. Not only does literature have important artistic value, it also plays a role as a catharsis of intellectual restlessness. Literature channels creative energy so that people without power can express their thoughts about the world or themselves. While the real world is far from perfection, one can build the ideal world through literature. One of the media to actualize such an ideal world is Internet.

Internet by definition is a network that links computer networks all over the world by satellite and telephone, connecting users with service networks such as e-mail and the World Wide Web. For the people who use the Internet, search engines, apart from the email service, might be one of the most frequent services used online. People search for articles, new ideas, and even extreme ones online since everyone can put anything on the Net. When people can put either invaluable information or detestable statements, literary works can go online as well.

In connection with this phenomenon, this paper aims to highlight Internet, online literary works by Indonesian writers, how Internet users interact with each other, which eventually lead to an understanding of how to appreciate online literary works.

Internet provides ultimate opportunity to express ideas and to disseminate literary works. It is an option that young writers or amateur poets can take when conventional mass media leave no room for them to express themselves. There has been a heap of literary works online from a wide range of genres, writers, and of course, nationalities. There is also a growing number of Indonesian writers who begin to make the most of Internet as a medium to publish their literary works. It is an interesting fact that some of them publish their works in English and some present the works in two languages, Bahasa Indonesia and English.

Internet enables Indonesian writers to bring Indonesian literary works to global community. The world can view Indonesia from its literary works, which, in a way, represent the culture, and gain better understanding of Indonesian people that can be exactly different from the profiles shown on TV or written on the newspapers.

As sure as God made little green apples, since everyone can express anything on the Net, Internet can be a very hectic place. Contradictory ideas emerge at the same time, and nobody has the authority, or deemed to have one, to tell the right from wrong. Everyone can pass their own judgments. This situation requires a shift of responsibility. To maintain harmonious social relationships, one should be responsible for his or her own actions or statements, rather than demanding an external authority to impose order.

Last but not least, appreciating online literary works takes a new understanding of the nature of online social relationships. As stated above, everyone shares their own responsibility of maintaining harmonious relationship.

I found this site because actually I was searching for International Seminar that I would love to attend. It is interesting to find Indonesian Literary Works especially on the internet since I don’t have time to search anywhere else beside the net.
For Pipit perhaps you could read about Cyberculture, or Cybernetics and its relevance with English Literature. Hope that might help you.
